As a mother, discovering a children’s book that resonates deeply with both parent and child is a rare treasure. The Ball Inside of Us by Candice Kwok is exactly that - a meaningful, heartfelt read that beautifully introduces the concept of self-compassion to young children.

Though my daughter is only 15 months old, I find immense joy in reading this book to her. The large, simple illustrations are wonderfully engaging for little ones, making it easier to connect with the story even at a very young age. Despite the book addressing complex emotional themes, it does so with a gentle simplicity that makes it accessible and impactful.

At the heart of the story is a powerful metaphor - a ball made of warm energy called love, representing our true inner self. This central idea encourages children to recognise and nurture their own inner goodness. The book gently introduces important emotional concepts, including the acceptance of big feelings as a natural part of being human. It sends the reassuring message that it’s okay to feel a wide range of emotions.

What truly stands out are the affirmations sprinkled throughout the pages:
•  “I am human.”
•  “I’m trying my best.”
•  “There’s love inside of me.”
•  “I am enough.”
•  “I’m worthy.”
•  “No one is perfect.”

These simple yet profound statements offer a beautiful, preventative approach to emotional education and well-being. They empower children with language that fosters self-acceptance, empathy and resilience from a young age.

The Ball Inside of Us is more than a picture book - it’s a nurturing experience that parents can share with their children. Highly recommended for any caregiver looking to plant the seeds of kindness, self-worth and emotional awareness early on.
